This 8500 square foot home, built by Sidney B. (Bert) Allen Builder of Forest Virginia, is located in Bedford County Virginia.

During construction, Mr. Allen solicited the services of Toler Insulating Co. Inc. and Scott Horseman Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. to plan and coordinate the energy efficiency requirements for this project. These trades, when coordinated, are the greatest application of energy saving efficiency in design for building construction.

Toler supplied and installed, KNAUF Fiberglass batt insulation including, R-15 in 2 x 4 exterior walls, R-19 between floors, 3 ½” R-11 at interior walls, R-21 at 2x6 basement walls and R-38 blown stabilized cellulose for the attic,. The poured concrete basement wall was held back to allow for 2 x 4 framing to be used making room for R-19 fiberglass batts at this location. This home was draft stopped using Hilti Minimal Expanding Foam around all windows, doors, and holes penetrating exterior walls and floors. Bert’s construction crew took care of insulating areas inaccessible to the insulator after the initial framing stage. These areas included corners, T-post and some of the floor bands where joist were positioned to close not allowing access after flooring was installed. Toler furnished unfaced fiberglass batts for these applications to eliminate mold issues.

Of importance to the design was the location of geothermal furnace and associated air duct system. One 6 ton unit from a geothermal heat system is used to heat and cool this home. Horseman applied duct mastic to all duct joints for an air tight seal prior to insulating the ducting system.

Another key energy saving feature was the Owner’s choice of Marvin Integrity windows and doors to complete the building envelope.

It takes a team to make a home this energy efficient. So if saving money month after month is important to you contact us, we would like to be a part of your team.

Below is a copy of November 2008 utility bill. The difference in the October and November billing cost is relative to the property Owners heated pool still being in operation for October billing cycle.
